Walk more, ache less! Small tweaks that actually help

Have you been walking much lately? And more importantly... how do you pull up afterwards?

If you've been feeling a bit achy post-walk, read on for some tips that might be the difference between feeling energised after a walk versus feeling stiff and sore for days...

If long walks = days of stiffness and pain...

Consider this important factor: Are you strong through your core and legs?

When we don't have that foundational strength (even just through bodyweight exercises like Pilates), our body can't maintain good alignment during longer activities. This can lead to unnecessary compensations, which show up as pain and stiffness later.

Your walking stamina and your muscle strength need to work together. One without the other often leads to that "why am I so sore?" feeling.

Getting back into walking after time off?

Don't expect to pick up where you left off. I know it's tempting, but your body needs time to rebuild that walking fitness.

Start shorter and slower than you think you need to, then build up over several weeks. Take mental note of how you feel the next day, if you're pulling up stiff and sore, dial back the distance or pace for your next walk.

Think of it as training your body to love walking again (like your mind already does!), not forcing it and missing the joy.

The footwear factor (especially on holidays!)

Wearing the right shoes really counts. This catches so many people out, especially when travelling.

You know the scenario... you're walking from your accommodation to dinner, it's a bit further than expected, you're in those cute but not-so-comfortable shoes and suddenly your legs and feet are complaining for days.

Of course you want to wear your nice shoes out! But back it up by wearing supportive sneakers the next day to help your body recover and compensate.

The bottom line: You body wants to move and explore, we just need to set it up for success!
